- Howdy,
-
- I just resurrected my Amiga 1000 from storage. It all seems to work,
- so now I'm wondering what to do with it. I dusted it off to give to a
- computerless friend as a terminal, if nothing else. I even found a
- terminal program I wrote way back when, using XPR (external protocol)
- libraries for file transfer protocols! woo woo!
-
- I'm wondering if there is a way to get PPP or SLIP up; or even an X
- server? Am I dreaming?
-
- I bought the computer in '86, and used it until the spring of '92.
- Since then I've been completely out of the Amiga world. I wandered
- around the web a wee bit last night, and found AmiNet with loads of
- software. The problem, of course, is knowing what will work on an
- A1000 (precious little, I'm sure) without having to download
- and try it.
-
- Thus, question #1 is: are there some files floating around to guide me
- in finding software for this beast? Any guesses on how much of
- AmiNet's software will, in fact, run? For instance, I'm using
- Kickstart/Workbench 1.3, which I know is seriously outdated. Is there
- anything more recent that will run on it?
-
- I have all the 1.3 autodocs and includes. I do have a working DICE
- setup, but I'm loathe to do any compiling on two floppies :( Is it
- possible to get a gcc cross-compiler going on my linux boxes? I
- suppose I'd need some way to link the object files. What do I do
- about libraries?
-
- Failing that, I'd settle for scheme or even FORTH. I have a vintage
- FORTH setup here (though I haven't tried it yet).
-
- Dare I even dream of using NFS or some facsimile? At one time I had a
- "parallel IP" setup between two linux boxes. This consists of wiring
- four bits of a parallel port, so it's a bit faster than a single
- serial line :) Is this heard of in amigaland?
-
- Though I'm loathe to spend any money on this thing, I do have a spare
- IDE disk and controller lying about. I dimly recall seeing instructions for
- an interface between the amiga bus and IDE. If this is doable, I'm
- all ears.
-
- Finally, if you've read this far and have an A1000 still in
- production, just drop me a note about what you're doing with it. I'm
- a little curious to know if any are still in use.
-
- [I'd appreciate it if any POSTED replies were also CC'd to me.
- Thanks]
